Features
This is my finest kit to date, I supply you the components to build your own set of Polk Like Floor Standing Towers .
This design will compare to the RTi12 series although for proper reasons, it is not an exact copy, but comparable in design features and performance.
So if you have ever wanted to build a set of very high quality floor speakers, we supply you with enough components to populate two cabinets of the EM-i12 design.
Each cabinet holds three woofers, two mids, a silk dome Polk tweeter and a Bi-Ampable Cerwin Vega three way crossover.
Again you get enough components to fill a pair of the EM-i12 speakers.
What you get....
6 each of the Polk RD7225-1 - 7" woofer
4 each of the Polk RD0514-1/2 Mid woofer
2 each of the Polk SL5501 Polymer Dome tweeter
2 each Bi-Ampable Cerwin Vega 3 way crossover
Included is a basic design drawing of the
EM-i12 style cabinet.
This gives you the basic layout and allows you to modify to fit your needs.
When finished you have a cabinet that is 45" tall, 9" wide, and 18" deep, a fairly massive design which will complement any system.
Background;
The Polk design on using multiple woofers is nothing new, for a great many years designers have used smaller woofers in tandem to replicate the reproduction qualities of a much larger speaker, the benefit is a woofer with a smaller mass and quicker recovery. The result is a much cleaner sound without the loss of bass. Given that we have the components we tried to closely replicate the basic design spirit of the Polk Audio RTi12 design, changing it to fit my taste and building pattern.
What to expect in performance, general specs...
Simply a nice clean sounding 8 ohm speaker with realistic power handling from 10 to 250 Watts RMS, a frequency range from 20 Hz. to 20 kHz. at about 95 db.
With some basic woodworking skills, you will find yourself with a set of speakers that you would need to spend 2 to 3 times your investment to replace.
Now the drawing is just a rough idea of the project, I'll do a better more complete set of plans in the near future, but it gives you the basics of the design.
About the components....
The Woofer
- Polk Audio RD7225-1 a 7" three ohm Woofer wired in series for this project. Rubber Surround, Poly Cone, Shielded design.

The Mids
- Polk Audio RD0514-1/2, a 5.25" four ohm mid woofer, this drivers is also wired in series to get the 8 ohm circuit. Rubber surround, treated cone, shielded design

The Tweeter
- Polk Audio SL5501 a 1" Soft Polymer Dome Tweeter, eight ohm, one used per speaker.
The Crossover
- Cerwin Vega Bi-Ampable three way crossover, 12 db design, with heavy duty gold plated binding posts.
