D E S C R I P T I O N

Having sold a this Boston Acoustics Kit for some time now, I was able to come up with some nice finished cabinets that I could package with the speakers and put together a nice complete kit. You just add some screws, a bit of damping material for the inside of the cabinet and elbow grease. It's a nice simple and quick evening project which results in a good sounding Center Channel Speaker.

What do you get:

Two 4 1/2 inch Shielded Boston Acoustics Foam Surround Woofers 50 Hz to 4500 Hz. 60 watts, 4 ohms, 1" vc
One Shield Samsung Performance Tweeter 20 watts RMS, 95 db, dome, 3kHz to 20 kHz, 8 ohms
One Cerwin Vega 2 way Crossover, 100 watts, cross-over point 3600 Hz, 12 db..
note that you will need to wire the BA woofers in series to give 8 ohm impedence.

Now for the elbow grease.

Tools you'll need for the project:
Dremel or some other type of tool to shape wood
Saber Saw
screw driver
Soldering iron
Pencil or marking device
Ruler or small square

Supplies needed:
(4) #6 x 3/4 inch flat head wood screws
(12) #6 x 3/4 inch pan head wood screws
Damping material (fiber glass, poly fill etc...)
Solder
Length of 18 ga. stranded wire

Cabinet modification how-to

You will need to enlarge and recess the mounting holes slightly in the cabinet, I used a Dremel and sanding disk on the sample I built, took about 10 minutes to shape and fit the speakers.
Once the hole is large enough, put the speaker in the hole and trace the outline and router out the face of the cabinet to recess the speaker so that it is flush. Again I used a Dremel and sanding disk for this.

Next you'll need a saber saw, flip the empty cabinet over and scribe a 3 1/8 inch by 2 5/16 inch square centered in the rear of the cabinet. We will be mounting the crossover. Cut the crossover mounting hole into the back of the cabinet.

Clean up the dust and get ready to assemble

Install the crossover with 4 mounting screws (a 3/4 inch #6 flat head wood screw works great)

Flip the cabinet over and stuff in the damping material, pull through the speaker leads, blue to the center tweeter hole and one red lead to each of the woofer holes.
Attach the blue leads to the tweeter, the solid lead is positive, and install the tweeter securing it with (4) 3/4 inch pan head wood screws
The solid red lead from the crossover goes to the positive connection in the first BA woofer. You need to cut and strip since the speaker connector is larger than the connector on the lead, solder the lead inplace. Next take a 12 inch piece of wire and solder one end to the first BA woofer on the negative connection, then feed it back into the cabinet an out of the other woofer opening.
Second BA woofer is connected to the red lead with the stripe, it attaches to the negative connection on the speaker. Next take the piece of wire that you attached to the first BA woofer and solder it to the positive connection on the on the speaker. This wires the woofers in series.

Secure the woofers with 8 each of the 3/4 inch #6 pan head screws (4 in each speaker) attach the grill and have fun, it's done and you Did It Yourself (DIY) with the help of Electro Mavin.
